What Does it Mean to Have Accountability

I used to run marathons. Over the course of 8 years I ran 8 full marathons and 26 half marathons. Marathon training was intense and sometimes my training runs were 4+ hours long. During that time I was working a full time job and my 3 boys were all under the age of 11 yrs old. My favorite part of the day was waking them up and cooking them breakfast. Many days I would wake at 3am to get my training runs in so that I could finish before they awakened.

This wasn’t easy to do. I was often tired, many days it was raining or cold. It would have been easy for me to push snooze on the alarm or turn it off altogether. However, I had someone waiting on me. I had an accountability partner…in fact, I had several accountability partners. I was fortunate enough to have had women in my life who knew what my goals were. They not only supported me in my endeavors but held my feet to the fire.

What does accountability look like?

Sometimes accountability looks like a friend waiting at the end of your driveway at 3AM in the pouring rain with her rain gear on. Sometimes it’s an early morning phone call to make sure you’re ‘up and at em’. Or maybe it’s a text before you go to bed to remind you why your goals are important.

I knew myself pretty well and I knew that I would allow excuses to take me off course if I didn’t have those accountability checks in place.

If you are struggling to find your path or struggling to hold yourself accountable, then maybe it’s time to ask for help. Enlist a friend or family member who either has similar goals or cares enough to help lift you up towards your goals. If your goal is to go to the gym 3 times a week, find someone to carpool with. If you know someone is depending on you for a ride or vice versa, chances are you won’t back out. And if you are having trouble finding an accountability partner or a circle of people to lift you up and support your goals, then please reach out. We have staff of caring and qualified coaches who are great at encouraging and holding people accountable. You can click HERE to schedule a time to talk to one of our coaches.
