Head Coach Scott Shirley started CrossFit in 2010 and became a CrossFit L1 coach in 2011. While CrossFit was the start of his fitness coaching career, he has been a competitive athlete for most of his life.

A member of various sports teams in high school, Scott eventually turned his focus towards tennis where he helped the Austin High School tennis team win its first ever Alabama state championship. Scott achieved a top 10 Alabama junior ranking earning a scholarship to play for the University of Alabama in Huntsville. After college he continued to play competitively as an adult becoming the first resident of Morgan County to ever earn a 5.0 player rating from the United States Tennis Association. In 2005 he help lead a team to the USTA Mixed Doubles National Championships representing the state of Alabama and placing 3rd. He has also spent time as a USPTA teaching professional coaching juniors and adults.

After discovering CrossFit, he and a business partner opened Morgan County’s first CrossFit gym, CrossFit Protocol, in the fall of 2012. Through his guidance, CrossFit Protocol quickly grew into one of the largest CrossFit gyms in Alabama.

In 2014, Scott began Powerlifting and has since made it his personal training style of choice. In 2016 he won a gold medal at the United States Powerlifting Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Scott is currently the Head Coach at his second CrossFit gym, Golden Ape CrossFit – HSV. He is a CrossFit L2 trainer, USAW Sports Performance Coach, and a CrossFit Movement and Mobility trainer.

In his spare time Scott enjoys spending time with his family and 3 grandchildren.
